Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport (CAN) Transportation Guide for Beginners

Guangzhou Baiyun Airport is primarily divided into Terminal 1 (T1) and Terminal 2 (T2). For complete beginners, although this mega-airport has a massive transportation network, it is actually very straightforward once you break it down into categories. Here is a step-by-step guide on how to get around:

Option 1: Rail Transit (Subway & High-Speed Rail) – Traffic-Jam Proof & Beginner-Friendly

If you want to head to downtown Guangzhou and are worried about road traffic, rail transit is your absolute first choice.

Intercity Train (High-Speed Rail): If you want to go directly to Qingyuan City after landing, the high-speed railway station is built right inside the terminal! At the Ground Traffic Center (GTC) on the first floor of T2, you will find the “Baiyun Airport North Railway Station”. From here, there are 34 daily intercity trains heading directly to Qingcheng Station in Qingyuan, passing through places like Huadu and Shiling.

Metro Line 3: This line runs through the most bustling commercial areas of Guangzhou, such as Tiyu Xilu. The airport has two very intuitive subway stations: “Airport South” is located at T1, and “Airport North” is located at T2. The ticket fare ranges from 2 to 11 RMB.

Option 2: City Airport Buses – Best for Travelers with Heavy Luggage

If you are carrying a lot of heavy bags and find it inconvenient to navigate subway stairs, sitting comfortably on an airport bus is the best option.

Beginner Ticketing Tip: Buying tickets is very simple. You can search for the “空港快线大巴” (Airport Express Bus) mini-program on WeChat, or follow the “广州运通旅运” (Guangzhou Yuntong Travel) official account. You can easily check schedules and buy tickets directly on your phone.

Extensive Route Coverage: Whether your destination is in Baiyun District (e.g., Guangzhou Baiyun Station), Yuexiu District, Tianhe District, Haizhu District, or further out in Panyu District, Zengcheng District, and even Nansha District, there are direct buses connecting these areas to the airport.

Fare Guide: Prices vary based on distance. Generally, going to Baiyun and Yuexiu Districts costs 25 RMB, Tianhe District is 30 RMB, Haizhu District is 35 RMB, Zengcheng District is 40 RMB, Panyu District is 45 RMB, and the farthest Nansha District is 65 RMB.

Option 3: Regular Airport Buses – For Short Trips or Late-Night Arrivals

If you just need to travel between the two terminals or go somewhere close to the airport, there are regular transit buses like “Airport Line 1”, “Airport Line 2”, and “Bus 708”, with very cheap fares ranging from 2 to 3 RMB.

If you arrive in Guangzhou late at night when the subway and regular buses have stopped operating, don’t panic! The airport provides the “Night Bus 106” as a backup option for a fare of 4 RMB.

Option 4: Intercity Long-Distance Buses – Direct to Other Cities

If your final destination is not Guangzhou but another city within Guangdong Province, do not mistakenly head to the downtown railway stations! Baiyun Airport is directly equipped with long-distance coaches bound for other cities.

You can take a direct bus from the airport to many surrounding cities, including Dongguan, Foshan, Heyuan, Huizhou, Jiangmen, Qingyuan, Yangjiang, Yunfu, Zhaoqing, Zhongshan, and Zhuhai, achieving a truly seamless transfer. It is also recommended to purchase these tickets online via the “空港快线大巴” mini-program or the “广州运通旅运” official account.
