Guilin and Yangshuo offer a journey into the heart of classical Chinese landscape painting, where the jade-green Li River weaves through a surreal, towering forest of limestone karst peaks.

Located in the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, Guilin has been celebrated by poets and artists for centuries as possessing “the finest scenery under heaven.” The city is served by Guilin Liangjiang International Airport (KWL) and is a major stop on the high-speed rail network connecting South China. While Guilin itself is a bustling city built around picturesque lakes and iconic formations like Elephant Trunk Hill, its primary role for most travelers is as the launchpad for the breathtaking journey south down the river.

The true magic of this region is experienced on the Li River. Whether by large cruise boat or a motorized bamboo raft, the journey to Yangshuo reveals a mesmerizing, mist-shrouded landscape of needle-like mountains, grazing water buffalos, and ancient villages. Upon arriving in Yangshuo, the pace slows down. This county is a haven for outdoor enthusiasts and those seeking rural tranquility. Here, you can cycle through the stunning Yulong River valley, explore massive subterranean caves, or watch the spectacular “Impression Sanjie Liu” light show, directed by Zhang Yimou, set directly on the river itself.

Weather in Guilin & Yangshuo

The region has a subtropical monsoon climate, meaning high humidity and distinct wet and dry seasons. The best times to visit are autumn (September to November), when the weather is clear, dry, and comfortable, offering perfect reflections on the river, and late spring (April to May), which brings dramatic, misty rains that create the classic, moody “ink-wash painting” aesthetic. Summers are hot, incredibly humid, and prone to heavy downpours, while winters are short, damp, and chilly, though rarely freezing.

Transportation

Guilin is the transport hub, featuring an international airport and several high-speed railway stations (Guilin, Guilin North, Guilin West). The classic journey between Guilin and Yangshuo is the 4-hour Li River cruise. High-speed rail now also connects Guilin directly to Yangshuo Station (located in Xingping, a short bus ride from Yangshuo town). Once in Yangshuo, the best way to explore the surrounding countryside is by renting a bicycle or an electric scooter, allowing you to freely navigate the narrow paths through the rice paddies and karst formations.
